Joy is not a Metaphor offers a unique insight into Ana Pis’s ongoing research project, CORPO FIRME: peripheral dances, sacred gesture, focusing on movement practices of the transatlantic African diaspora, and revolving around the question: What forms of knowledge, memory, and freedom are stored in bodies, and how they can be given greater visibility through dance? Exercises in rhythm, presence, body tension and active listening lead to creating individual and collective choreographic situations. In the space between improvisation and movement composition, between autonomy and community, the workshop aims to explore how images, memories and relationships emerge through movement.
